Team Barker Lounge

Team Barker Lounge raised $430 towards The American Cancer Society! I was informed today by the event chair, Marsha, that our team was the # 1 team in raising donation! Anne, the owner of The Barker Lounge, with the kindness of her soul, had weekly raffles to raise money for this cause. Her entire staff also took park in the walk, byraising money and attending the 1 mile walk through Rose Tree Park with their favorite canine!

The American Cancer Society is an outstanding organization. I have a soft spot in my heart for this cause because of the ones we have lost on the way to this discouraging disease. I also have a soft spot in my heart for those that have made it through the hard times of treatment and survived this debilitating disease. My mother, my inspiration, is a cancer survivor. With organizations like the American Cancer Society, we are able to bring awareness, education, assistance and support to those battling cancer.

Cannot believe it is SPRING 2011! Wowzers. Where did 2009...wait, 2010 go?

Today I want to focus on grooming your canine! The weather is going to be getting warmer, coats are going to be getting dirtier and we need to make sure our pups are looking sparklin' springy! Enjoy the pictures from our Saintly Saint grooming!

Why is it important to groom your dog? A dog that is clean is happy and healthy! Dogs with longer coats tend to get mats. Mats will cause your dog pain if they become out of hand! They can cause pulling on their skin and can be a breeding ground for nasty bacteria! Brushing and bathing regularly help keep your canines coat shiny, luxurious and full! Also, canines can have seasonal allergies. Keeping their coat clean and pollen free will help reduce itching, scratching and irritation!

Also remember to keep an eye on your dogs ears and teeth! Ears are a pee tree dish for bacteria and yeast! Especially pups with long ears or swimmers. So all you labs out there.... make sure your parents gently clean your ears out weekly!

Clipping your dogs nails is important to. The vein in their nails (the quick) can grow pretty long and cause pain for your dog! Don't feel comfortable clipping your own dogs nails (I know I don't)....most groomers take walk in nail appointments and depending on size are $5-$12!

Grooming can also be a great bonding experience between owner and pooch! I brush my dogs every few days and they love it! They love the attention it gives them and it helps make them more comfortable when bath time, clip time and nail trim time come. They learn that the brush and tools are not the enemy! BUT, they are the friend! Also, when you brush your dog regularly, you will become aware of any abnormalities. YOU NEVER KNOW! :) Better to be safe then sorry!

Summer is around the corner! A great way to cool off your dogs is a shave down! Not all breeds are great candidates- but most are. What is cuter then a naked dog? Helps them cool down when the weather gets to hot! I am very excited to give my Quincy his summer cut so he can cut loose!

Bottom line? Groom your dog! A healthy dog is a happy dog. Not only is regular vetting, nutrition and exercise a top priority- so is a trip to the salon (or barber shops for the manly men)!

Delco SPCA 55th Annual Wags'n'Whiskers Luncheon

Tom & I were invited to attend the 55th annual Delaware County SPCA Wags'n'Whiskers Fashion Show & Luncheon. We had yet to attend a fashion show representing adoptable animals & humans. We have been to each individually- so it was rather refreshing. I heard luncheon and I put on my Chanel Pearls and pencil skirt- what can I say... I saw an opportunity and I took it. A light lunch, a chardonnay and an amazing community is what really  helped launch the 55th year in animal advocacy and education.

They had a silent auction and after a few glasses of wine, we bid on several items. We only won one though! We will be attending a Philadelphia Union Soccer game in the next few weeks. They also had nights out on the town, photo shoots, pet goodies etc... anything you could have wanted to bid on- was there!

The people of Delaware County shared stories of their rescued pets and sadly, those pets that crossed the rain bow bridge. Ginger, the rescued Pitbull, received an award as a canine good citizen, a rescued and rehabilitated dog and an amazing pibbly ambassador! Puppies, seniors, small dogs, large dogs and even cats were there rocking glamorous clothes! They all had one thing in common- they were looking for their forever homes. They were abandoned by their loved-but are not hopeless. They have a second chance because of the community.

The staff, the board members, the volunteers and the supporters of the Delaware County SPCA all came together to show unity in this journey that is so near and dear to our hearts.

ADDIE-ADOPTED 06/22/11

Our amazing, fabulous, beautiful foster Saint, Addison, was recently adopted by AN amazing, commited family in NJ. She now has childen siblings along with chickens and kitties! She has settled perfectly and BEYOND happy!! We miss you and love you Addie and know that you were patient as you waited for the perfect home to come along!!

Beautiful, young, healthy Addie had found herself in rescue! Saintly Bernards Rescue is committed to finding Addie a committed home that will allow her to blossom and be the center of attention. Addie is ready for the spoiled life!

Addie is super social with all! She does great with people, with children, with large dogs, with small dogs and even with the cat! She is an athletic and strong female who needs a little leash work! With a committed leader- she is GREAT on the leash. Addie is extremely EAGER to please. She knows all basic commands and listens wonderfully!

Addie enjoys walks, romps and LOVES to play fetch with her squeaky toys!

Each saint that comes into the program is fully vetted (including all necessary blood work, xrays, neuter/spay, medications, monthly preventatives), fully socialized (placed in foster care with dogs of all sizes, ages and sexes, dog park romps, pet store runs), fully groomed and thoroughly temperment tested. Each saint that enters the program is put on a high quality grain free diet with healthy extra yummies and any necessary supplements. All you need is L.O.V.E

Being sleep deprived and mentally  and physically exhausted... ALL WORTH IT! Who would ever have thought that the cries of tears would soon become tears of happiness.


My strong willed and determined Dad successfully overcame triple by pass surgery at the age of 46. We, as a family, were lucky enough to catch the blockages by a ROUTINE stress test. Without that stress test my father, Richard, was on borrowed time. His father died of a massive heart attack in his early 60's. My Dad has smoked for years. He was a recipe for disaster. BUT, god has a way of giving people a second chance. A second chance at life through no smoking, healthy eating, exercise and lots of love and support. This second chance is not granted to everyone. Lucky is not the word that can even describe my Dad.



My Dad has a long road of recovery in front of him, and I will be by his side the entire way. I know that I have the MOST amazing family and friends who have shown me that everything and anything can be done with love.



My Dad kept saying that he wasn't ready to go yet because he hasn't had his dream car, a corvette. Well and of course because he has amazing children, grandchildren, furkids and furgrandkids. But- my Dad the man of stern and dry humor now has that opportunity to get that corvette he dreamed of.



I hope that everyone takes a second to look at your life, what makes you happy, and what  can make you happier. And then look at your health and see what you can to prolong your life. Maybe a puppy, maybe more walks, maybe skipping that cheese steak for a salad or maybe finding your passion. Live life from your heart- JUST MAKE SURE YOUR HEART IS HEALTHY!

Dad

I have had a goal in life to not be such an emotional basket case and a drama queen. At 27 years old- I have now declared myself who I am. Not changing. Why change? I feel as if I am genuine to myself, my family and my friends. I care with all my being. I have flaws and the ones who loves me accept those flaws. I am who I am. So now let me be dramatic and emotional :)


Family has always been at the top of my list of priorities. Health and Happiness for my loved ones is what I pray for daily. When someone I love is sad- I am sad. When someone I love is happy- I am happy.


When a family member falls ill- it shakes me to the core. I have had several dear friends lose parents in the last year and I am constantly at a loss for words for them. How can our parents get sick and leave us? They are the ones who care for us and stand by our side. They are the ones who judge us every second and in the same breath do not judge us for anything. They are the ones we trust with our souls. They are the ones who listen to our endless conversations about what makes us happy. They are the ones who sacrificed in their lives so we can have the lives that we have. Their voices are the voices that calm and comfort us. Their words are the ones who sooth our worries. Their touch is the touch that makes everything alright. Our parents are our fundamentals for who we are- how can they need us the way we need them?


The confusion, the fear, the uncertainty.... they are the ones who are supposed to tell us everything will be okay. Now having to stand by Dad and help be his words of inspiration, his positive light and his caretaker... I have grown up beyond my years in the past two days. I am now the one who will need to support my father, sooth his soul and comfort him in his worries. True love comes from within and never needs to be said because it is felt through our voices and through our touch.


I will always be my Dad's little pumpkin. But now he needs me and needs my strength to help get him through this hard time in his life.
